The Lincoln County Health Department's Office of Environmental Sanitation has enforced environmental sanitation guidelines since 1987. As Lincoln County continues to grow, more environmental services are demanded and added. These include inspecting eating establishments, lodging facilities and on-site septic systems. The Office of Environmental Sanitation also offers water testing and emergency response to hazardous waste incidents.
The food code took effect in 1998, stating that food service establishments are inspected at least twice yearly, provided no critical violations exist. Temporary food stands organized by civic and church organizations are also inspected and get 14-day permits. Inspection results are posted monthly in the Lincoln County Journal and Elsberry Democrat.
On-site septic system inspections are required for new construction and for major repairs to existing systems. The septic system ordinance took effect in 1996.
